The Situation: Six World Cup spots, but actually only five since South Africa qualify as hosts. South Africa are still involved since these double as Africa Cup of Nations 2010 qualifiers.

The remaining 48 teams are currently in 12 Groups of four. Four games have been played. The 12 group winners plus eight best runners up advance to next stage. Those twenty teams will be drawn into five groups of four. All five group winners will qualify.

Games to Watch:

Zimbabwe vs Guinea (Sep 7th) - Guinea currently top Group 2, level on seven points with Kenya. Zimbabwe are currently third with five points. So this is pretty much a must win for Zimbabwe.

Congo DR vs Egypt (Sep 7th) - Two teams tied at the top of Group 12 with nine points, but neither are safe because Malawi are just three points behind.

Zambia vs Togo (Sep 10th) - Both teams are in the weird three team Group 11, currently topped by Swaziland, so a win here would be huge for either team.

13 qualifications spots = 53 teams in nine groups.

The nine group winners qualify, eight best runners up are drawn against each other in playoffs for remaining four places.

Games to Watch:

Austria vs France (Sep 6th) - Somehow, Raymond Domenech is still in charge of France and has a chance to redeem himself after the disaster that was Euro 2008. Austria have a new coach in Karel Bruckners and will be confident after a recent 2-2 draw with Italy (just a friendly, but still.)

Spain vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sep 6th) The new European Champions back in action. Can new boss Vicente Del Bosque keep the good times going, even with Fernando Torres out injured?

Cyprus vs Italy (Sep 6th) Marcello Lippi returns to the Azzurri to defend his World Cup trophy. There are definitely easier ways to start than an away trip to Cyprus.

Croatia vs England (Sep 6th) It’s the rematch. Croatia beat England home and away in Euro 2008 qualification and then went on and impressed in SwissAustria. England stayed home. Fabio Capelo is being paid millions to make sure that doesn’t happen again, so a defeat in Croatia would be nothing short of a disaster for him.

3.5 qualifications spots = top three in the hexagonal qualify, fourth place team plays off against CONMEBOL 5th place team.

Games to Watch:

Cuba vs USA (Sep 6th) - not a great footballing contest, but the political aspect is fascinating.

All games involving Mexico, Jamaica, Canada and Honduras - because Group 2 is the Group of Death. Two of those teams won’t get to the hexagonal.

Chile vs Brazil (Sep 7th) - Brazil need a win to leapfrog Chile. Defeat could mean the end for under fire Dunga.

BRAZIL

Júlio César – 6: Was the busier of the two keepers in the first half but barely had a touch of the ball after the restart other than a few routine saves at the end.

Maicon – 7: Had a couple of openings down the right flank in the first half but failed to make the most of it. Virtually played as an attacking right winger throughout the game, but didn’t quite have enough understanding with his teammates.

Lúcio – 7: Always has that calming effect at the back, especially when he brings the ball forward out of defence. Brazil’s goal never really looked in any danger with him around.

Luisão – 6.5: Collaborated well with Lúcio to form a very solid backline. Dunga may have found his perfect match in the centre of defence.

Juan Maldonado – 7: Very adventurous going forward, perhaps a little bit too ambitious. Never could produce anything significant despite countless opportunities.

Lucas – 6: Didn’t quite have the authoritative impact that Gilberto Silva normally brings. Still, he managed to carry out his duty as the first line the Brazil’s defence.

Josué – 6: Was given licence to roam upfront with Lucas covering at the back, but he was unable to make an impact. There were a number of times where he found himself free outside the box, but his lack of offensive instincts let him down.

Diego – 6.5: Constantly hassled off the ball but kept on fighting with determination and spirit. Also helped out defensively to break down Bolivia’s advances.

Ronaldinho – 6: Restricted to short passes and set-piece deliveries, all of which were a huge disappointment. Still doesn’t have the acceleration or the pace to take on defenders.

Robinho – 8.5::79: He has regained full confidence. Wasn’t afraid to show off his tricks and flicks and run at defenders. But even his magic couldn’t unlock the stubborn Bolivia backdoor. The best player on the night.

Luis Fabiano – 5: His most telling contribution of the night was to stray offside three times. Barely afforded a shot on target.

Substitutes:

Julio Baptista – 7: More involved in attack than the man he replaced, Lucas. Had two or three cracks at goal and, without doubt, the best chance of the game with a late glancing header.

Elano – 6: Had an immediate chance from a freekick. Other than that, he wasn’t any more decisive than his attacking teammates.

Nilmar – N/A

BOLIVIA

Arias – 7.5: Only had one real save to make in the first half and that was to cut out a low cross. Didn’t have that much to do either in the second period but made that absolutely crucial finger-tip save late into injury time to deny Baptista.

Hoyos – 6.5: Had an intriguing battle with Ronaldinho and Juan. His excessive focus on Ronnie allowed the Brazilian leftback too much room to exploit but lucky for him, it never resulted in any damage.

Raldés – 8: The captain was a rock at the heart of defence, busy patrolling the backline cutting out crosses and intercepting passes. Brazil would have had at least a couple of goals if it wasn’t for him.

Rivero – 7: Hung deep inside the box to clean up in case his teammates let one slip through. Always alert to any last minute threats, not that there were a lot of them.

Ignacio García – 5: Contributed a lot in attack. Looked less assured in defence, though, allowing Maicon to slip through a number of times before clumsily clattering into Robinho to get himself sent off.

Flores – 5: Kept drifting into the middle rather than hold his position on the right flank. That allowed room for Juan to consistently charge forward and at the same time deprive the team of attacking options.

Robles – 7.5: Made perhaps more tackles – and fouls – than anyone else on the pitch. Always there to frustrate the Brazilian offence whether it was to hassle Ronaldinho off the ball or charge down Robinho and Diego.

Ronald García – 7: Very active around midfield with his attacking and defensive duties. But without much to aim for upfront, his ventures into the Brazilian half would always end fruitless.

Vaca – 5: Another wide man who was extremely quiet. Constantly moved out of the way for Ignacio to attack. Had to assume that role when the leftback was sent off and it was clear he was not comfortable in that position.

Jaíme Moreno – 7: Had a few decent look-ins at goal, but the opposition defence was just to solid for him to breach. A shame that he had to be sacrificed in the second half in order for Bolivia to beef up their backline.

Marcelo Moreno – 5: Never could beat Lucio and Luisão on the ground or in the air. A frustrating evening for the young 21 year old without too many scoring chances.

Júlio César – 6: Was the busier of the two keepers in the first half but barely had a touch of the ball after the restart other than a few routine saves at the end.

Maicon – 7: Had a couple of openings down the right flank in the first half but failed to make the most of it. Virtually played as an attacking right winger throughout the game, but didn’t quite have enough understanding with his teammates.

Lúcio – 7: Always has that calming effect at the back, especially when he brings the ball forward out of defence. Brazil’s goal never really looked in any danger with him around.

Luisão – 6.5: Collaborated well with Lúcio to form a very solid backline. Dunga may have found his perfect match in the centre of defence.

Juan Maldonado – 7: Very adventurous going forward, perhaps a little bit too ambitious. Never could produce anything significant despite countless opportunities.

Lucas – 6: Didn’t quite have the authoritative impact that Gilberto Silva normally brings. Still, he managed to carry out his duty as the first line the Brazil’s defence.

Josué – 6: Was given licence to roam upfront with Lucas covering at the back, but he was unable to make an impact. There were a number of times where he found himself free outside the box, but his lack of offensive instincts let him down.

Diego – 6.5: Constantly hassled off the ball but kept on fighting with determination and spirit. Also helped out defensively to break down Bolivia’s advances.

Ronaldinho – 6: Restricted to short passes and set-piece deliveries, all of which were a huge disappointment. Still doesn’t have the acceleration or the pace to take on defenders.

Robinho – 8.5::79: He has regained full confidence. Wasn’t afraid to show off his tricks and flicks and run at defenders. But even his magic couldn’t unlock the stubborn Bolivia backdoor. The best player on the night.

Luis Fabiano – 5: His most telling contribution of the night was to stray offside three times. Barely afforded a shot on target.

Substitutes:

Julio Baptista – 7: More involved in attack than the man he replaced, Lucas. Had two or three cracks at goal and, without doubt, the best chance of the game with a late glancing header.

Elano – 6: Had an immediate chance from a freekick. Other than that, he wasn’t any more decisive than his attacking teammates.

BOLIVIA

Arias – 7.5: Only had one real save to make in the first half and that was to cut out a low cross. Didn’t have that much to do either in the second period but made that absolutely crucial finger-tip save late into injury time to deny Baptista.

Hoyos – 6.5: Had an intriguing battle with Ronaldinho and Juan. His excessive focus on Ronnie allowed the Brazilian leftback too much room to exploit but lucky for him, it never resulted in any damage.

Raldés – 8: The captain was a rock at the heart of defence, busy patrolling the backline cutting out crosses and intercepting passes. Brazil would have had at least a couple of goals if it wasn’t for him.

Rivero – 7: Hung deep inside the box to clean up in case his teammates let one slip through. Always alert to any last minute threats, not that there were a lot of them.

Ignacio García – 5: Contributed a lot in attack. Looked less assured in defence, though, allowing Maicon to slip through a number of times before clumsily clattering into Robinho to get himself sent off.

Flores – 5: Kept drifting into the middle rather than hold his position on the right flank. That allowed room for Juan to consistently charge forward and at the same time deprive the team of attacking options.

Robles – 7.5: Made perhaps more tackles – and fouls – than anyone else on the pitch. Always there to frustrate the Brazilian offence whether it was to hassle Ronaldinho off the ball or charge down Robinho and Diego.

Ronald García – 7: Very active around midfield with his attacking and defensive duties. But without much to aim for upfront, his ventures into the Brazilian half would always end fruitless.

Vaca – 5: Another wide man who was extremely quiet. Constantly moved out of the way for Ignacio to attack. Had to assume that role when the leftback was sent off and it was clear he was not comfortable in that position.

Jaíme Moreno – 7: Had a few decent look-ins at goal, but the opposition defence was just to solid for him to breach. A shame that he had to be sacrificed in the second half in order for Bolivia to beef up their backline.

Marcelo Moreno – 5: Never could beat Lucio and Luisão on the ground or in the air. A frustrating evening for the young 21 year old without too many scoring chances.

Substitutes:

FABIO CAPELLO will give Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard one last chance to prove they can play together.

England boss Capello is working on a plot to pair them in midfield for Saturday’s Wembley World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.
He plans to test the combination in a full-scale practice match at the Three Lions’ training HQ on Thursday. And if that works they will get the nod to team up against the Group Six minnows — even though they have rarely gelled in competitive games.
Liverpool skipper Gerrard missed the qualifying wins over Andorra and Croatia because of a hernia op.
And Lamps’ combination with Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry was one of the keys to success in the amazing 4-1 victory in Zagreb.
But Capello believes Gerrard is far too good to leave out of his side.
Lampard’s form has made the Chelsea man undroppable — so Barry could be the fall guy.
Alternatively, Barry may survive in a holding role — with Gerrard and Lampard pushing further forward as part of a 4-3-3 formation.
The Italian boss has toyed with the idea of using Gerrard on the left of a four-man midfield, particularly with Joe Cole out injured, but realises he is most effective through the middle.
