All-women fitness centres in good shape

Women say they like the privacy and freedom from having to worry about looking attractive for iron-pumping men in the room.

By Lim Wei Chean
The Straits Times
04 January 2006

WHEN a sports survey found that Singapore women prefer to exercise in an all-women environment, some fitness centre entrepreneurs sat up.
A year after that Singapore Sports Council survey, there are now more women-only fitness centres here.
At least three opened over the past 12 months, the most recent just last month. They added on to pioneer women's specialist Amore Fitness' eight centres.
They are also cashing in on what appears to be an Asia-wide trend of working women having more money to spend, and spending a big chunk on themselves.
Joining the fitness fray last month was first-time entrepreneur Chong Wan Kit, 38, who secured a master franchise licence from the American company, Contours Express International. Her centre at International Plaza, at the heart of Raffles Place, targets working women in the central business district.
She used to run language and computer training centres, but is optimistic that her fitness menu will catch on with women here.
'Women here are very health conscious and increasingly more affluent,' she said. 'They want to feel good, stay healthy and pamper themselves, so I think what I have to offer will appeal to them.'
Her main attraction is a 30-minute gym circuit training routine for groups. The women gather in a room with 16 pieces of gym equipment targeting different sets of muscles.
A trainer acts as instructor and motivator, with the women taking turns at the various exercise stations.
Women say they like the privacy and freedom from having to worry about looking attractive for iron-pumping men in the room.
Unisex gyms have also found that many women prefer to exercise minus the men, and some set aside exclusive gym space, time slots or training sessions for them.
Accounts manager Veron Leong, 27, said she had been to unisex gyms but never felt 'at home' there.
Having switched to a women-only centre, she said: 'We are all there for one reason - to work out - not to attract men.
'So there is no sense of competition. The sense of camaraderie is very strong because we will encourage each other through the more difficult parts of the classes.'
Charging a minimum of between $40 and $80 a month, these clubs also offer classes tailored specially for women.
Madam Jasmine Teo, 42, managing director of the pioneer Amore Fitness chain, which started with one centre 20 years ago and now has eight, said men and women have different fitness and health objectives.
'Women want smaller waists, smaller arms and toned abdomens, whereas men want to build up bulk, muscles to show that they are macho,' she said.
The mother of two claims her centres have over 70,000 members, of whom 30,000 are active. Her first club opened in 1985 and had just over 1,000 members.
The growth of her club can be used as a benchmark for the women-only fitness market, she said. Amore has an annual turnover of about $8 million, and has six spas in addition to the fitness centres.
The fitness entrepreneurs reflect a trend advertisers have noticed too.
A survey released by media agency OMD last August showed that the top-earning 28 per cent of women in Singapore have a total of at least $1 billion to spend each month. That is an average of nearly $2,400 a month for each of these 450,000 Singapore women who are graduates and aged between 20 and 49.
The survey, which polled more than 3,000 women in seven Asian markets including Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, also showed that nearly a third of this group also earn more than their husbands.
It is no surprise then that more businesses are tuning in to this potentially lucrative segment of the market.
Exhibition organiser Singex Exhibitions launched The Women's Expo, its first exhibition for women, last September with more than 60 exhibitors attracting over 30,000 visitors to the four-day event.
Project manager Serene Ho said the expo will be an annual event and expects it to grow.
Jones Lang LaSalle's associate director of retail Pauline Tan sees the trend of niche marketing growing as more retailers identify sectors to cater to. For now, she said, women are hot.
The OMD survey revealed that Singapore women, like those elsewhere in Asia, spend more on themselves.
Of the $2,381 each woman spends in a month, 32 per cent is spent on necessities, 11 per cent on transport, 18 per cent is saved and 40 per cent is spent on personal indulgences.
Health is a major issue, with 64 per cent of the Singaporean respondents saying that they read Mind Your Body, the weekly Straits Times health magazine, and 60 per cent saying they engage in sports or physical exercise at least once a month.
It is these women that the new fitness club operators are hoping to target.
Ms Michelle Hoo, 32, started Go Fitness at Wheelock Place last January with three friends and claims about 400 regular members.
Ms Nelam Nordin, 36, a fitness instructor for more than 15 years, started All Shapes Ladies Fitness Centre. She opened her first club in Bugis Village last July and a second one in Joo Chiat in November.
She says she has about 140 members altogether.
Latest entrant Ms Chong hopes her new club can draw 400 members and is already planning a second in the heartlands.
Another American women-only gym company, Slim and Tone, is said to be in negotiations with potential franchisees to open more such gyms here.
But is there a big enough pie for all these operators? All those interviewed were positive and said the key to survival is variety, as they offer different types of classes and experiences.
The bigger companies are also looking at using Singapore as the launching pad into the rest of Asia.
Home-grown Amore Fitness started a franchising programme last year and hopes to move into regional markets.
Similarly, Contours Express International's director of international development Will Arvin expects the American chain's future expansion to focus on Asia.
He said: 'As women all over Asia get more affluent, they have a growing appetite for fitness and the exclusivity of women-only clubs will appeal to them, regardless of which part of Asia.'

Hopefully di Malaysia kita tak perlu nak beli master franchise dari oversea... sebab She's Fit dah mula operasi since November 2004. Hope ada bumiputera yang berminat utk join this line of business...
